A judge at The Old Bailey has sentenced former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice and doctor Obinna Odeta to jail.
At a sentencing hearing today, Ekweremadu was jailed for nine years and eight months, his wife Beatrice was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment while Obeta received a 10-year prison term.
Ekweremadu, his wife and their doctor, obinna obetta were found guilty in march at London’s old bailey criminal court of conspiring to traffic the young street trader into Britain for his body part.
It is the first-time organ harvesting conspiracy charges had been brought under the uk’s 2015 modern slavery act.
Ahead of today’s sentencing, prominent Nigerians, including former president Olusegun Obasanjo, members of the senate and house of representatives had appealed to the London court to pass a lenient judgement of the lawmaker.
