The main opposition party in South Africa has appealed to the anti-corruption watchdog to investigate alleged inflated contracts sponsoring ministers’ lavish homes.
The appeal follows a release by the ANC government, stating that between 2019 and 2022, nearly $5m had been spent to maintain dozens of properties occupied by public servants.
The opposition democratic alliance maintained that the statement further cements statistics of corruption in the cabinet, while appealing that security operatives examine the facts and persons involved.
The recent controversy adds pressure on president Cyril Ramaphosa, who was elected on promises to root out corruption after his predecessor Jacob Zuma’s term was marred by political and financial scandals.
