Legal Practitioner and public commentator, Tosin Ayo has predicted that the student loan law signed by President Bola Tinubu would fail, because it does not reflect the realities of the socio-economic and educational realities in Nigeria.
Ayo, while featuring on Adamimogo FM’s Follow Up explained that with unemployment at about 33 percent and no viable plan to increase employment yet, the repayment plan for the project was more likely to fail.
While acknowledging the President’s foresight in signing the law, the lawyer suggested that the tertiary education system in Nigeria was in need of more radical reforms such as granting autonomy to institutions and reviewing the recruitment system to employ those who are passionate about lecturing.
The legal practitioner urged the Federal Government to invest in data, to enable it appropriately capture those in need of the loan and track possible defaulters.
