A 45-year-old woman, Saridewi Djamani today became the first female to be executed in Singapore in the last 20 years following her conviction for possession of heroin.
Djamani was found guilty of possessing over 30 grams of heroin, which is more than twice the volume that merits the death penalty in Singapore.
Announcing the execution, Singapore’s central narcotics bureau said she had been accorded full due process under the law.
The bureau added that her appeal against execution was dismissed by the court of appeal in October 2022 while her presidential clemency was also rejected.
The last person to be executed before now was Yen May Woen who was hanged for drug trafficking in 2004.
