The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for the Best International Feature Film (IFF) category of the Oscars, has announced the decision of its founder and chairperson, Chineze Anyaene-Abonyi to step down from the position.
The decision of Anyaene-Abonyi is said to be coming few days after she secured the Oscars’ re-approval of the NOSC ahead of the 96th edition of the Academy Awards that will be held next year.
In a statement announcing her exit from the NOSC, the Committee recounted how she attempted to submit her film for Oscars’ consideration in 2012, only to discover that Nigeria had no constituted committee for film submissions.
This, it noted, resulted in the constitution of the NOSC which submitted Genevieve Nnaji’s “Lionheart”and Desmond Ovbiagele’s “The Milkmaid” for consideration in 2020 and 2021 as well as the recognition of pidgin English as a local language.
The statement indicated that the new leadership of the NOSC will be announced in due course.
