The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has identified Libya, United Arab Emirates, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and India as haven for Nigerian traffickers.
The Director General of NAPTIP, Fatima Waziri-Azi, disclosed this during the Inaugural Joint Technical Working Group meeting between Nigeria and The Gambia to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons.
Waziri said victims of trafficking were primarily subjected to illegal enterprise such as sexual, labour exploitation, and domestic servitude, stating that Nigeria’s ability to combat human trafficking effectively translates into a global response to reduce crimes in general.
United Nations Representative from the Office on Drugs and Crime, Oliver Stober, claimed that victims of domestic trafficking have increased by 24 per cent despite concerted efforts in sub-Saharan Africa.
