Senate Senses Deceit in Concessioning of Abuja, Kano Airports, Orders Probe
The Senate has condemned and resolved to probe the concession of the Aminu Kano International Airport Kano and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, following allegations that because the process of concessioning the airports was faulty.
This resolution followed a motion by a Senator,Sumaila Kawu who said there were signs that the concessioning did not entirely follow the the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Act and the ICRC procedures manual.
Kawu suggested that Federal Executive Council was misguided in concessioning the Kano Airport to Messrs Corporation America Airports Consortium as the Federal Ministry of Aviation does not own or run any airport in Nigeria.
Instead, the ownership and management of all federal government airports are fully vested in FAAN.
The lawmaker stated that he is alarmed that Nigeria is receiving a concession fee upfront of $1.5m while the total amount of money that the Kano airport is accruing to the government is $97.4m.
